An Alcoholic's Remedy Poem by John Thorkild Ellison

An Alcoholic's Remedy

Rating: 4.8

Nowadays, quite often, I find myself thinking
That I might just as well go back to my drinking -
You'll never feel for me what I feel for you
Though I wanted so badly for you to love me too.
I kicked the bad habit to win your esteem,
'Perhaps then she'll love me! ' - that was my dream,
But it wasn't that simple, it didn't work out,
I know you won't alter, of that there's no doubt.
All I am left with is this endless ache,
Knowing sooner or later my poor heart will break,
And I really am scared that that there will come a day
When you meet someone special or move far away.
The gods are unkind to allow this pain -
The loneliness and longing could drive me insane -
You gave me your friendship but I wanted much more,
The union at last with the one I adore,
Poor stupid fool not to have known
That cripples are fated to sleep on their own!
Perhaps you imagine I'm being absurd
With the stupidest reasoning you've ever heard,
Do you believe that the alcohol was only a crutch?
It's the solace of lovers who love far too much! !

A lovely poem, well articulated and penned with insight. It's good you've kicked the addiction, but stopping alcohol much be for you and not for the sake of love though it's equally nice you stopped it for the sake of the relationship. Love is a spiritual experience that comes and goes without warning. It's a beautiful poem. Thanks for sharing and do keep it up. Please read my poem MANDELA - THE IMMORTAL ICON.
