And God Created Mankind

Rating: 4.3

And God created mankind in
His own image, female, male,
and thereby hangs the human tale
that’s all about what some call sin.

It isn’t. Though it may sound odd,
the Lord Himself, Herself, you’ll find
is male and female, humankind
the image of this sexy God.

Inspired by Harold Ellens, Research Scholar at the University of Michigan Department of Near Eastern Studies, who in his book “God’s Sexuality” claims that the depiction of first Man as male and female, created in God’s image, implies that Genesis 1 believes that Man’s the need for reaching out sexually for a partner echoes own need for reaching out for other beings:

It is clear that the author of the passage, and related passages in the Bible, could have said that God is like us, but he or she clearly intended to put it the other way around. In our sexual natures we are like God….It is possible that we should read this passage as saying the [sic, read that] God desires us and longs for communion and union with us in some way comparable to how we desire and long for each other sexually. I suppose this is highly likely. At least we might suppose that we have here a reference to the fact that God has an irrepressible need to connect and communicate within himself as well as with us and his created world: and that our gender polarity and our sexual polarity both incite us to that same kind of spontaneous and hungry reach for encounter, contact, communion, and union with another person or with other persons; as our need is the same as that need which is present in the very nature of God.
