Anterotics Poem by William Ernest Henley

Anterotics

Rating: 3.0

Laughs the happy April morn
Thro' my grimy, little window,
And a shaft of sunshine pushes
Thro' the shadows in the square.

Dogs are tracing thro' the grass,
Crows are cawing round the chimneys,
In and out among the washing
Goes the West at hide-and-seek.

Loud and cheerful clangs the bell.
Here the nurses troop to breakfast.
Handsome, ugly, all are women . . .
O, the Spring-the Spring-the Spring!

I love the skill of the poet for this exquisite landscape and the action taking place there on. But I can't find merit in his observation 'nurses troop to breakfast.... Handsome, ugly, all are women'. It is not fair to describe nurses on superfluous parameters.

I love the personification: the April morn laughs through his window. Light pushes the shadows away and is happy doing it. The west is playing hide n seek. Trochaic tetrameter in form (stressed, unstressed x four) . O spring! I can’t wait for spring to return either as winter is upon us.

My take on this. A mom is at a maternity hospital gave birth to the baby narrating the story. The dogs and birds are just to give the ambience of nomalcy. The dogs are coming for morsels thrown out by nurses on a feeding break. They are being chased away playing hide abd seek. Bell for food break clangs and the nurses go back to work. My critism is that there is no such as an ugly nurse. In white they are all beautiful

Loved the great imageries drawn in words, particularly the following: 'And a shaft of sunshine pushes Thro' the shadows in the square'. The poem gets 5 stars***** from me.
