As Time Stands Still Poem by Nick Downer

As Time Stands Still

It's hard lying alone in bed at night.
It's hard to sleep.
My stomach feels full of butterflies,
full of time sitting stagnant
and not seeming to pass.
Every night feels the same
so how can I say time really is passing
and that it's just not frozen
when I crawl beneath my covers.
I lay and know you should be beside me.
It's like your presence is here
but I can't feel your heat.
Sort of like a mirage
on a sweltering desert day,
I can swear I see your shape beside me
but if I focus closer
you vanish into the darkness.
I always tell you how
I'll wrap my arms around you
and keep you warm, safe and happy.
I'm kinda like the man,
being vocal and wanting to
protect and love my woman,
and I will.
But inside, im scared and sad
and I just hope I will feel
safe and protected by you
and in the knowledge that you love me.
I need that as much as I need to give it.
