As We Part Poem by onesimo odwa mabovula

As We Part

I’ve been hurt, but it hurts me more now than ever before
My love for you amounted to garbage
I paid to you homage
Wished for you and us nothing but happiness

I dreamt that someday, when we are both old and frail still together
That we would look back with smiles,
Not that now when we are still young, fresh and full of energy
We would be sad or at least I would be sad looking into the future

It breaks my heart to know that you are leaving
And there’s nothing that I can do to save our love;
That I will hold you close, to my heart, no more.
My head is hanging down I feel like the world has forsaken me

I must admit your leaving removed a lot of weight of my shoulders
But an even heavier burden has been loaded.
Is there absolute happiness? I wonder.
But in you I found a sense of security

I can’t say ‘later’ nor can I say ‘till we meet again’
For when we meet again if we do meet
It will be as if we never knew each other cause the pain that I feel,
Digs deep into my emotions leaving a wound that will never heal

In all this as we part as we both try to find new paths to happiness
I want you to know that I’ll treasure the good times we had
And review all the bad times we had so as to know where we went wrong
I’ll engrave the past as it forms a part of the man that I am

I beg you not to hate me, not to blame anyone else
But to love me truly and honestly with your whole heart
To reserve a special spot for me even when you are with another man,
Because I will never forget you
