At Night

The sun goes down the shadows dance
Fade as the moon comes out of its trance
The stars come out begin to shine
Clouds then vanish from the sky
The house stands at the dark woods edge
The bed sits near the windows ledge
He closes his eyes and tries to sleep
But hears the windows shutter and creak
The wolves howl in the dark of the night
The trees block out all of the moonlight
He closes his eyes drifts off to sleep
But then awakes shortly at the hour of three
Shoots straight up in bed and sees
The bloody scratches on his window screen

poet Alfred Edward Housman

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
