August 1865 Poem by Carolyn Clive

August 1865

FLOWERS for thy grave! and first I bear
The one whose name beseems the spot;
For me it breathes to thee the prayer,
Forget me not, forget me not!

Then Cistus, destined as thou art,
To perish in one day of bloom;
And Love that lies with bleeding heart,
Outstretch'd upon thy early tomb.

Immortals next, whose golden ray
Seems coloured by a dawning sky,
They tell me what thou art, and say--
'Take comfort, for thou too shalt die.'
