Azar Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Azar

Azar

Azar; Persian word and a name
Azar; name for girls
Azar means Atash; it's fire
Azar; is a month as is the November.

Everywhere in old days
Zoroastrians adored it.
Their shrines, Ateshgah
There Moobeds led prays.

Azar, name for girls
I knew some of them
Our neighbor, I believe, was the first
Wind blew her skirt; I turned head
She noticed; thanked and said:
'Impure sells herself even if in bottle.'
Her life turned disaster; I have heard.

"This is why she's fire."
Someone said of Azar
Baby-girl lost mother at her birth.

Today; with things changed
I heard of an Azar living in USA
She; teacher, is writer
I've heard 'Lolita in Tehran'
Like many she had to immigrate
Far away from our Mum
She sounded unhappy
I read her between lines: 'USA is Mirage.'
