Backward Glance Poem by Vicky Biorseth

Backward Glance

So what if I love you? Go on about your business. I am not important enough for even a backward glance. I am easily stepped on or stepped over. You are the one who holds my heart and every thought in my head. For now. You lie and promise when there is no need to. All you have to do is relinquish ownership of my heart and head and I will be free. However, for reasons unknown you do not offer them back to me. I am the lowest life form in your world. I am who you call upon when there is no one else available. The 'Preferred' are busy so you call upon the 'Sure Thing'. Your very last choice. Following the rights of ownership...I come to you. Careful though, I don't stay weak and submissive forever. When it occurs to me that enough is enough, I will set myself free. I take it all back and will step over and away from you without even a backward glance.
