Battle Scars Poem by Amanda R. McKinnon

Battle Scars

You hide the scars from the world around you, But the pain is still there no matter what you do. The nightmares haunt when no one is around, Sometimes you jump at the smallest sounds. Your safety was stolen in the black of night, And no matter how hard you search you can't find the light. At times you feel like you just can't breathe, and no matter where you go it never leaves. Trust is sometimes so impossible to find, at times you feel like you've lost your mind. You lost many friends during this crazy fight. You keep searching the tunnel looking for light. The tears start flowing and your wounds won't mend, Sometimes you want to drown just to make it all end. You've lost yourself somewhere inside. Don't want to be seen, you feel like you've died. Strangers want you to talk but you just want to forget, the past is filled with many regrets. What if I had just done things differently? Would this still have happened to me? You blame yourself and feel you did wrong. They say it wasn't your fault and tell you you're strong. No matter what they say you only feel pain. You can't help but feel that you'll never be the same. I understand everything you feel. I know how real the nightmares can feel. I know what it's like to wake up in tears, and I have also battled these fears. We all learn to cope in our own little ways. And you will find the brighter days. It won't be easy but it can be done. Many have fought this battle and found the sun. We've all around although our scars aren't shown. But always remember that you're never alone.
