Betrayed Poem by Irene Umulisa

Betrayed

Today I feel like a ship wrecked at sea.
Today I stand fully ignorant in my knowledge.
I stand bleakly as I watch life pass me by.
Today I have become an infant.
Today I am an orphan.
I stand isolate.
I stand as the sole believer of my philosophies.
Today my eyes open wide,
Wide at the realization that what I thought I knew
I know not.
Today I am an orphan.
Parentless, friendless,
An alien,
A loner for alone I am.

Today I am the town’s leper.
The blind man at the street corner
Singing my sorrowful tune,
Begging for a penny,
Begging for someone to love me.

Today I am an orphan.

Today I have no ability to write verse,
For orphaned and ignorant I stand
As I watch all that I thought I knew
All my philosophies…
Being wrecked at sea…
