Bible in Poetry: Gospel of St. Luke (Chapter 10a)

  Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two:

1The Lord then sent seventy-two,
Ahead of him to every town,
He was about to visit still;
2 ‘The Harvest is so plentiful;
But workers are a dearth and few;
3I’m sending you like lambs ‘midst wolves;
4Don’t take a purse, or sandals, bag;
Don’t greet a person on the road;
5Enter a house and say, ‘Peace to this house’.
6If there’s a man of peace, your peace will stay;
7Eat whatever is given unto you;
A worker is entitled to his wage;
Don’t move around from house to house.’
8Entering a town, if welcomed then,
Eat what is set without asking;
9You heal the sick saying, ‘God’s Kingdom’s nigh! ’
10If you’re not welcome in a town,
Enter its streets and say,11 ‘Even the dust
Of your town, we wipe off from our feet.’
‘Remember God’s Kingdom is near! ’
‘But on that day, I tell you, ’ said Jesus,
12 ‘It will be bearable for Sodom than
The town which does not welcome the God-man! ’
13 ‘Woe to you Korazin and Bethaisda! ’
‘For, if miracles you had witnessed
14Had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,
It will be bearable for them than you;
For, they would have repented more promptly,
15And Capernaum will go down to the depths;
16 ‘He who listens to you, listens to me;
He who rejects you, also rejects me,
And Him rejects, who has sent me to you;
17The seventy-two returned with joy
And said, ‘Even demons submit to us! ’
18He said. ‘I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! ’
19I’ve given you pow’r to trample on
All snakes and scorpions;
To overcome the enemies;
Nothing will harm anytime;
20Do not rejoice that spirits submit to you;
Rejoice for writ are your names in heaven.’
21Then Jesus, full of joy through Holy Spirit, said,
'I praise you, Father, Lord of heav’n and earth,
Because you’ve hidden these from the wise/ learned,
Revealing them to small children.
Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.’
22'My Father committed all things to me.
No one knows the Son except the Father;
No one knows the Father, except the Son,
And those to whom Son chooses to reveal.'
23 He turned to his disciples and then said,
'Bless’d are the eyes that see whatev’r you see.
24For, many prophets, kings wanted to see
What you see but did not see it,
And hear what you had heard but did not hear.'
