Bible in Poetry: Gospel of St. Matthew (Chapter 1)

  The genealogy of Christ
Jesus, the Son of David King,
The son of Father Abraham: -

Abraham was Isaac’s father,
Isaac was Jacob’s own father,
Jacob was Judah’s own father.
Judah- Perez, Zerah’s father,
Tamar was their mother,
Perez became Hezron’s father,

And Hezron was Ram’s father,
Ram was Amminidab’s father,
Amminidab, Nakshon’s father,
And Nakshon was Salmon’s father,
And Salmon, Boaz’s father,
And Rahab, Boaz’s mother.

Boaz became Obed’s father,
And Ruth, Obed’s mother,
Obed became Jesse’s father,
Jesse was King David’s father,
David was Solomon’s father,
And Bathsheba was his mother
Who was wife of Uriah!

Solomon, Reheboam’s father,
Reheboam, Abijah’s father,
Abijah was Asaph’s father,
Asaph, Jehoshaphat’s father,
Jehoshaphat, Joram’s father,
Joram was Uzziah’s father,
Uzziah was Jotham’s father,

Jotham was Ahaz’s father,
Ahaz, Hezekiah’s father,
Hezekiah, Manasseh’s father,
Manasseh was Amos’ father,
Amos was Josiah’s father,
Josiah, Jechoniah’s father,
During the time of Babylon’s exile.

After the Babylonian exile: -
Jechoniah, Shealtiel’s father,
Shealtiel, Zerubbabel’s father,
Zerubbabel, Abiud’s father,
Abiud, Eliakim’s father,
Eliakim was Azor’s father,
Azor became Zadok’s father,
Zadok became Achim’s father,

Achim became Eliud’s father,
Eliud, Eleazar’s father,
Eleazar was Matthan’s father,
Matthan became Jacob’s father,
Jacob became Joseph’s father,
And Joseph was Mary’s husband,
Of Mary was born Jesus Christ,
Who was called also Messiah.

From Abraham to David were
Fourteen generations total;
From David to Babylonian exile,
Fourteen generations total;
From Babylonian exile to Messiah,
Fourteen generations total.

And this was how Jesus was born:
His mother Mary was betrothed
To Joseph, who was carpenter
Before they lived together then,
Mary was found to be pregnant
By the Holy Spirit’s power.

Since Joseph was a righteous man,
He didn’t wish to expose her shame,
Decided to divorce quietly.

But then, an angel of the Lord
Appeared to Joseph in a dream,
And said, ‘Son of David, Joseph,
Don’t fear to take Mary as wife;
The child that’s in her womb conceived,
Is through the Holy Spirit’s power! ’

‘She’ll bear a son, call him Jesus,
He’ll save his people from their sins.’

All this took place to fulfill what
The Lord had said through the prophet:
‘Behold, a virgin shall be with child,
And bear a son named Emmanuel,
Which means ‘in whom God is with us.’

So, Joseph woke and did as per
The Angel of the Lord’s commands,
And took wife Mary to his home.
He had no relations with her,
Till she bore son, infant Jesus!
