Treasure Island

Birckner

Der er en Kilde dybt i Jordens Skjød,
Som sine Vande op mod Lyset sender;
En Stund den springer himmelklar og sød,
Men til sit Udspring flux tilbagevender.

Dog ej for stedse gaaer den Kilde hjem;
Den ikkun for en Tid sit Løb omskifter.
Den tørres her, men hist den vælder frem
Med dobbelt Magt af Fjeldets mørke Rivter.

Begjærligt ile Jordens Slægter til,
At drikke Sandhed af dens rene Bølge;
Men Mørkets Børn den Kilde standse vil,
Og stræbe den med List og Vold at dølge.

Og smager dem end selv det friske Vand,
De miste dog, for Andre at bortjage;
Da kæmpes rædsomt der om Kildens Rand,
Og under Kampen synker den tilbage.

Men mangen Ædling hører under Muld
Den ætherre Vove lifligt suse,
Og graver som en Bjergmand efter Guld,
At Kilden kan i Solens Straaler bruse.

Blandt disse var, min gjæve Landsmand, Du!
Du tørstede, Du ledte, grov saa saare;
Du kæmpede med ufortrøden Hu:
Og frem mod Dagen sprang den rige Aare.

Du aabned Kilden i dit Fædreland,
Og mod dens Fiender vældigt den indhegned.
Du aabned den, men ak! paa Kildens Rand
Du træt og mødig udi Døden segned.

Du Sandheds Lærling — Sandheds Lærer selv!
Gud glæde Dig i Sandheds lyse Rige!
Dig rinder hist nu som en vældig Elv,
Hvad her Du som en Draabe saae opstige.

Poem of the Day

poet Edmund Spenser

My love is like to ice, and I to fire:
How comes it then that this her cold so great
Is not dissolved through my so hot desire,
But harder grows the more I her entreat?
