bird

i know why the caged bird sings
i built, myself, the bars
and danced among them gracefully
to hide from me my scars

The walls are high
the world is out
i spin amidst my pain

and beat my wings agaist my bars
and broken i have lain

my heart, it flutters
and i rise and bars still bind me in
I sing again of happy times
that I have kept within

I still sing my song, my love
I still hear the music now
I still feel the emptiness
and I still will not allow

myself to leave my cage my heart,
i can never go
but I know why the caged bird sings
you will never know.
