Blood-Bound Poem by Nika McGuin

Blood-Bound

Rating: 3.5

I know you well
recorded all the times you fell
out of grace, before my very face
still there's space, in my heart for you a place

Am I a glutton for pain and disappointment, possibly
I am a realist, yet seek your company
others may deem it foolish, that I forgive
but only one blood-bound father does God give

wallowing in my own futile bitterness
would only cast this wretched soul into blackness
for I know there is a reason - there has to be
why God bound two spirits, as lonely as we

The last lines of each stanza are particularly impressive in a very fine poem. I agree with Daniel. You are a real find! I'll be back for more tomorrow. It's getting a bit late now this side of the pond! Tom Billsborough

I came across this poem and re-read it. Once again I felt the GOOD VIBRATIONS pour out of you and lavish your family, in this case your father. It was a poem about you and your father ADDICT that led me to contact. you in the first place. And I'm so glad that I did because our sharing poems and thoughts via POEMHUNTER is one of the bright spots of my life. You were the second person I contacted; now I have I believe about 12 correspoents I keep in touch with, including two women in Ireland, both in their 60s like me, two teenage girls in NYC, and the others fill in the open space. But you are special to me, Nika, I want us to stay in contact always!

This is a quiet poem, and all the more moving because the inner wrestling is over, you already in the first stanza have reached the acceptance finally spelled out in the last stanza. I think the key line is in the second stanza Only one blood-bound father does God give and in the last stanza you affirm this by saying There has to be a reason God has bound two spirits. This is a personal poem which answers your personal needs but it also gives us readers a confidence that we too can resolve conflicts in our lives through quiet faith. Nothing is more persuasive than personal experience.
