The House on Mango Street bye Sandra Cisneros is a classic coming of age story written with a poetical tone. The main character is Esperanza a young girl who moves to mango street, and is describing her often rough life in short stories called vignettes. Majority of the people in her neighborhood are of Hispanic descent. The beginning of the book introduce us to many characters as Esperanza explores how they are affected by poverty, exile, and the restrictions on the roles of genders. In many instances of the story we see how Esperanza is ashamed of where she is growing up. In one scene at a friends dinner party Esperanza tries to hide the shoes her mother had given her to wear. This book also goes on to explore parts of puberty and essentially growing up that might invoke conflict in some of it's readers. The turbulence of Esperanza's adolescence is made even more painful as she encounters 2 instances of sexual violence. Through all of her terrible experiences throughout the story Esperanza surfaces as a stronger person then the one we met at the beginning of the story. The house on mango Street is one of those books that'll live with you forever let it be young or old. The themes it explores has affected us all in one way or another, and though written from the perspective of a young Hispanic girl we understand her as a person. Sandra Cisneros took her time in the way she decided to write the book for it appeals to every audience. We all know what it is to grow up, and I truly believe Esperanza could help some individual potentially become a better person then they were before. But most of all reading this book teaches you to never forget where you come from, and not every is as strong as you or I. Remember to come back as Esperanza May or May not have. But that part of the story doesn't necessarily matter for once you pick up this book and read it cover to cover you will know why you picked it up.
