Building The Perfect House Poem by Kevin Howell

Building The Perfect House

One day a bunch of people got together
a thinker, a dreamer, a lover, and a plumber
a thinker to explain complex schemes
a dreamer to do nothing but dream
a lover to add spice, it seems
a plumber to fix all the ordinary things

They all got together for one mission:
to build the perfect house
from its very foundation
and they were all led by the thinker
but some say it was actually the plumber

So as the lover pursued the town folk
and the dreamer dreams as life passes by
the thinker read up on the latest trends
scrutinize and quantify
'And after our house is finished
we'll charge rent and even make a buck or two'

First the dreamer went after the screws
then the thinker who forgot his shoes
they never could track down the lover
so finding wood went to the plumber
He said, 'How many two by fours? '
The thinker said, 'Don't you mean a four by two? '

So everything ran right along
then finally the lover pulled in
on a feeling, or maybe a whim
She said, 'Where's the party? '
and no one could wake up the dreamer

The next day ran just a little behind
the thinker was absorbed in his mind
the lover was nothing but kind
The plumber cried, 'Who redrew the foundation? '
The thinker said, 'It didn't meet specification'

So when it finally came down to the screws
they all woke the dreamer to get the news
as the lover was busy being distracted
and the plumber never could find any four by twos
the dreamer said, 'I stopped counting screws,
so I'm counting sheep instead'
and the thinker started to scratch his head

Well it turns out the lover ran off with the plumber
and the dreamer counts sheep until half past forever
The thinker was left to sit and think,
'Why can't simplicity relate to reality
and how does it all fit together,
and just where is the party? '

So that perfect house never got built
those four by twos, invisible screws just didn't fit
it now stands as a testament
to a comedic collaboration
One day a bunch of people got together
a thinker, a dreamer, a lover, and a plumber
