Carol (My Inspirational Friend) Poem by Chris Higginson

Carol (My Inspirational Friend)

Devil said, “God let us battle,
To see where the truth really lies
Set up a man I can rattle
To test if the faith he relies
Upon can shattered or bust,
To see if you really have cause
To say he is someone you trust
And follows your word and your laws”

So God selected a Being
To challenge the Devil at ‘Life’
A man all knowing and seeing?
Oh No! He selected a wife
A woman to test and to stand
For the things that matter to all
To take the ship’s tiller in hand
And steer to last port of call

Devil laid cards on the table:
A husband enamoured with booze
A country with future not stable,
A job she would work at and lose
Three children to raise all alone,
A house with a mortgage and debt
But did she whimper or moan?
She rose to the challenge he set

Courage exists in the heartbeat,
In the soul of soldiers at war
Who fight on and know no defeat
In spite of being wounded and sore
But also from mothers of sons,
She gives them the force to not bend
Misfortune sometimes overruns
But Right will prevail in the end

The Devil admitted defeat
In the face of superior force
He knew that he couldn’t compete
With one who could run the full course
Carol you’ve climbed up the mountain,
Your life has been tough and been hard
Sip some champagne from the fountain,
You’ve beaten the devil’s last card
