Carpenter- Dedicated To Richard Of Ely Poem by Yvonne Rautenbach

Carpenter- Dedicated To Richard Of Ely

Possibly a love I never knew
He stood for strength and resolution too
Carved like oak but softer than cut stone
Shoring up and beaming all alone
Firmly set in wholesome family ways
Calm within his workshop lathes
Surrounded by his shavings and his shavers
Repairing for the old amidst his labours
Always had a smile from very young
Carpenter who joins us every one

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I began by recalling a lovely carpenter i knew vaguely in Ely whose reputation was so good and was much loved by his community from a very young man. I wanted so much to know him but never felt able to approach..always felt too small and too uninvolved with his trade but as the poem evolved i realised I had another carpenter in mind too..I still think of them both and wish I had known them better.
