Ceaseless Night

Ceaseless Night

O jewel of dreams! O queen of love!
You are the one I’m dreaming of!
Harken! Harken! If you can
The wounded bark of a dying man!

A soldier sent straight to the grave,
Who bravely fought, but could not save
Himself from death, that solemn call
To leave the land, once and for all!

O pulse of time! O star of skies!
You are the sparkle in my eyes!
Harken! Harken! If you can
The wishes of a weary man!

A sailor of the vast expanse,
Dancing, dancing, in a trance,
His fear and courage far displaced,
His mind and body laid to waste!

O fires of heaven! O clouds of hell!
You’ve got me spellbound— wish me well!
Then darken, darken, dim my light,
Till all I see is ceaseless night…

How the heart feels a languid grief
Laid on it for a covering,
And how sleep seems a goodly thing
