Chinese Magnolia Poem by Paul Hartal

Chinese Magnolia

The villagers did not like the urban stranger.
They showered him with scorn, showed him disdain,
Yet he carried silently his deep-buried anger
And under his anger dwelt a burning pain.

He thought of life, enfolding through constant change
And he hoped bettering it was within his range.
Every dream is real, though life remains different
While time is tolerant courage is roborant.

And then he fell in love with a virtuous woman
And they moved together to a bigger town.
In the garden they planted flowers around a yulan.
But here the story ends with a rhyming noun.

Oh, pure jade orchid tree, citrus fragrant yulanhua,
Your flowers are pure and beloved, lily magnolia.
