Christmas Wish Poem by Janice Walkden

Christmas Wish

What do you want for Christmas?
What would you like to receive?
and if you got what you wanted
What would it really acheive?

For as each Christmas comes round
Seemingly faster as years go by
The latest gadgets and gismo’s
what this year will catch your eye?

The latest in computers
or a brand new plasma TV
A fancy new mobile phone
or the latest mp3?

Thinking back to yesteryear
of Christmas’s long ago
When all you really wanted
was to wake up and see the snow!

Oh you got your brand new bike
and your portable TV
and yes you got your record player
whoops - I meant ‘CD’

What if things were different
And these things did not exist
For you there was no receiving
of gifts on ‘Santa’s list’?

What if you had nothing
Absolutely nothing at all
and your bed for the cold winter nights
was a blanket near a wall?

What if you had nobody
And nobody really cared?
If you were cold and lonely
Your cries would not be heard

What if you were invisible
Your life neither here nor there
You are huddled in a corner
Alone - does no one care?

You are so fortunate
Even though that you may doubt
There are others in this world
who really do have now’t

So this Christmas when you are thinking
About all the money you have blown
Please have a thought for the homeless
And those who have nothing - or are... alone.
