Closing Down Of A Prison Poem by Jayatissa K. Liyanage

Closing Down Of A Prison

Dungeon it was, to many inheritors of the land
Who voiced and stood against mayhem clan
Invaders they were, from civilized West
Built strong to hold detained, within walls stout

National heroes, freedom fighters caged in
In thousands, within cells, hardly enough to squat on
Gallows ran in, to bung up the last breath
Of those whom imperialists couldn't cope with

Queued up from morning till eve, in thousands
To witness scars and scratches preserved on wall mass
Listen to echoed screams of their ancestors
And sniff the blood and sweat of heroic fighters

Millions who spent hours felt within hearts, remorsefully
Anguish, national heroes should've gone through, cruelly
In the heart of heart, prayed they solemnly, unknowingly
Let this monstrous icon of barbarous rule, be perished, totally!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
More than a century old prison, built by Imperialist rulers of the past, was an essential part of their ugly rule at that time. Country inherited this along with he Independence granted in 1948. Taking it as a long felt need and heeding to a nation's call, present administration decided to remove this eyesore from the country's most sacred city of today, which is the Hill Capital - Kandy. After evacuating of everything it had, people were given the opportunity to witness the prison, which was connected with many past individual characters of heroism.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Valsa George 09 January 2017

Queued up from morning till eve, in thousands To witness scars and scratches preserved on wall mass Listen to echoed screams of their ancestors And sniff the blood and sweat of heroic fighters Just before the demolition of the prison, I can imagine how people queued up to cast a last look on the place where their war heroes and national leaders have been oppressed and tortured by foreign imperialists! Great write!
