Cloud Of Hope Poem by Dann Thomas

Cloud Of Hope

He looks up into an umbrella of turquoise calm
Not a cloud of hope disturbs its great expanse
The clay in the field a cracking disturbance
Like a leper's sore gone dry, in want of balm

One long night, when dark worry gave way to sleep
He heard a sound that shook him off the floor
Answer to prayer stood rumbling outside his door
He burst out wishing that happiness would at last peep.

"Lakshmi" he cried out, our prayers have found life
"The rains, oh the rains have come for us"
Running around gleefully catching tiny drops
He called out with joy to his son and sleeping wife

Early the next morning with purpose he awoke
But something was wrong, saddening, disturbing
There was no clouds, no rain, a drizzle in passing
The land hadn't enough to quench its deep throat

Disappointed. Tugging at his leg she pulled him away
Happy little Lakshmi hugging, coaxing him home
"How will I feed my girl? " with emptiness sown
The heavens reply was deathly still, no answer that day

Alone, in the quiet of that night, he wept over his fears
A distraught man with nothing, not a dropp of hope
The choice was simple, pesticide or a piece of rope.
Next day there finally was rain, the rain of tears.

Every year thousands of farmers kill themselves when their crops fail and they have no one to turn to for support.

Let us pray that our Governments give priority to our farmer's needs and support them
