Colette The Whale Poem by Francis Duggan

Colette The Whale

Colette the baby leviathan her brief life was a tragic tale
She did not grow into an adult and become a giant marine humpback whale
She was forsaken by her mother for what reason who is to know
At the many mysteries of Nature one's wonderment only does grow.

She adopted a moored boat as a mother but when she nudged it for milk such it could not give
Poor Colette had become an orphan she was not destined for to live
For to swim with her pod the great oceans from the far north to the far southern shore
A round trip of leagues of ocean twenty thousand kilometres or more.

Poor Colette was a marine orphan and none so unlucky as she
Since she did not live to be an adult and give birth to young giants of the sea
Yet she won the hearts of a Nation with the images of her on t v
As she kept on circling the moored boat a heart rending sight for to see.

To save her of slowly dying of hunger poor Colette had to be put down
She was euthanazed at The Basin a beach not far from Sydney Town
'Tis said her mother by sharks eaten but animal lovers say Colette was left to die
That Government Bureaucrats did not try to save her to their humanity giving the lie.
