Come To The City Poem by Peter Tsai

Come To The City

I know you're on the farm, working day and night,
Never stopping for long, waking up before first light.
I know you don't make much, although you work so hard,
With all your crops and animals, growing in your yard.

I know you want the best, for your friends and family alike,
The reason why you labor, and work with all your might.
But you should leave them to themselves, let them work alone,
And come to the city, to work and play and build your throne.

You should buy your own automobile, to fly around the city,
You're working for yourself now, don't pity your community.
If they're smart enough to know the truth, they'll come here too,
To make their own lifestyle, to become a bigger and better you.

Why don't you wear your new tuxedo, your vest and boiler cap?
You need to look your very best, like the real spiffy chaps.
Don't worry about your past, or what your family will do,
Because now your in the city, where all your dreams come true.

Come on to to a joint, when you're done your daily work,
Come party with the flappers wearing those short mini-skirts.
I'm sure you'll really love them, swaying to the newest jazz hits,
Just look at all that makeup, it's quite the charm you have to admit.

Now you're in the city, you have to talk all good and proper,
And learn the flapper's slang, then you're be a real show stopper.
The dolls would surely love you, if you just learned to dance,
The Black Bottom, Shimmy, and especially the Charleston dance.

You must learn to smoke a cigar, to look like a cool guy,
You might have some spares, in case you run dry.
Life couldn't be any better, you get to have everything,
Wealth, music, and the girls; everything fit for a king.

But you have become bored, wanting to be bigger and better,
You'll find that the city doesn't change like the weather.
You might find without money, you have no city friends,
Because when you have no money, all the fun you had ends.

Working in the city may be quite a tempting thing,
But in the long run, troubles is all that it will bring.
Be content with what you have, or the things that you own,
By looking what others have will only make you groan.

Independence doesn't give you, all that you may want,
Or ensure that you'll be protected, from all earthly taunts.
But being close to your family, the difference it could make,
When your strength is all gone, and you feel like a fake.

But make sure you have real friends, that'll be there for you,
To help you back to your feet, when life gives you the blues.
Be sure that you'll be there, to help them out too,
'Cause God says, " Do unto others as you would have others do to you."
When you work by by yourself, many things can go wrong,
With no one to take you back, to your family where you belong.
You should work as a unit, with a common goal ahead,
To do the very things that the others members might dread.

Last but not least, the most important thing to have for sure,
Is Christ Jesus our Lord, because with Him all your longing is cured.
Plus it's not a bad choice, to have our Lord and Savior on our side,
Because nothing can defeat Him, no matter how hard they might try.
