Context Poem by Trevor Toews

Context

How can I speak of the present time,
Without first a moment of silence for what has been?
Can I tell you the meaning of today,
And never utter mention of the past?
Nay, I can't give you a sense of the state I am in,
And you'll never understand, unless I begin,
A-way, way back, and then not rush too fast,
To show you the context in which this day is cast.

Nor can I bring this day to life,
And give you the passion behind my present pursuit,
Without a look at the road ahead
And an explanation of where I am bound.
For just like every action has it's root,
So it strives to yield a finished fruit.
And as the tree contemplates the sky and the ground
I live today between what I hope for and what I have found.
