Cooking Poem by Dr. Baishali Bhaumik Mitra

Cooking

The splitter splutter
of cumin, mustard,
a stupefying aroma
of frying and baking,
an astounding vista
of red hot chicken
and butter spilled smooth lentil;
a pampering of the taste buds,
a joy of cooking,
a happiness of five senses,
like the promise of a new poem
like the rhythmic sway of dancing!

Charming smells of
ginger and olive oil,
butter and lemon hopping together, diced potatoes
binding with corn flour,
creamy onion paste
swirling over!
A milky white curd mix
sighing and crooning,
a frothing bubbly batter
almost swooning!
The slicing and chopping,
the clicking and clanking,
the boiling and bubbling,
the steaming and simmering!
The gentle stir and the soft whip,
the interlocking of a pressure cooker,
the soft thumping of the oven door,
the gentle stroke of the gas – lighter,
the snapping and popping
of the bread toaster!
Turmeric, pepper, fenugreek and chilly
whispering their magic power and promise,
dreams and desire spiraling and coiling,
crafting a new world for me,
creating my own domain,
making me an empress!
