Couples Dance Poem by Khauri Teverbaugh

Couples Dance

Arms clasped in this circle,

Who should step forward and who should step back
Each weighing the possibilities of it making us mad
Is wanting him to have his way...
Really having it mine?
Stuggling with each other to understand
Giving and taking in our demands

Arms clasped in this circle

Not wanting to step on his toes
Still feeling the need to be unexpectant
BOLD!
Needing each other to move in sync, in time
Yearning to feel closeness, While I'm...
steadily pushing him away
in this methodical sway

Arms clasped in this cirlce

Refusing to break our grip
Refusing to be bare in our emtions
Just Strip
All it takes is one move, turn
change
Don't keep me at this distance
feeling estranged
Teach me to let down my guard
and follow the lead in your arms.

Learning to be lovers clasped in this circle.
