Crossroads Poem by Shayna Butcher

Crossroads

Her mind ponders,

Overwhelming her

Like the debilitating heat of the desert

where the tumbleweeds fade away and die

before the glassy sun burns away a lifetime of crystals,

The glistening waters of the high seas

So far away, a place

where the vultures roam.

She looked around but you weren’t anywhere...

You used to say that you would never die,

But she took the wrong meaning into her heart.

Her sea rages wildly with despair,

Deep blue like the blue depths of the ocean,

A sapphire blue.

Then there’s the place where all God’s children rest

When they’re stuck at a crossroad.

She saw you there.

You and her, sisters of nature,

sisters of heaven,

and sisters of earth

Your usually calm,

But your sweet eyes grew full of tears,

Bitterly falling one after one into a river,

then the river of your life turned red in blood.

Her eyes watched in horror.

Slowly and deadly your heart became poisoned,

But what could make you so blind,

That you disappeared without saying good-bye,

Not a word came out of your mouth.

You became like desolation in its grave

When once the night sky was a realm of stars

And the sun shone brightly in summer skies

You were there to share the calmness

But now she stands here

in midst of the tall grass

And only the heat of the desert

remains.
