Cry Not Man Poem by Moses Muliro

Cry Not Man

Cry not man, they slapped you when still a baby and simply a child
And you wept, sobbed and sulked and it was worse
You managed a smile but in that they found fault too
'Stupid they', shouted yet you were only a child
Your father barked, your mother squarked and you wondered who to look up to

Cry not man, for when you were down you gathered strength
Even when on the ground you seemed fallen
Not till the grave did you lie in full length
You woke still stood upright though heavy laden

Cry not man, for now you have grown with your head big
Big to understand that life is an oil rig
If you must stand erect amidst this sea
Stand firm, wipe your tears that you may see

Cry not man, for it has dawned on you
The very day you were born was a threshold of rehearsal
Yes, that you may face what lays in your path; the meek ewe
Or the snake and crack on and hustle

You woke up when dawn crept on your window
To fend for your family you chased the sun to the horizon
To feed your own you toiled hard like a forsaken widow
So tired you slept but for an inevitable reason

When the days ended you cried not
You smiled at the face of death
And you finally became a man when life became a naught
You died but the smile lived just when you lost your breath
and at your funerals they said; 'this man died but many battles he fought'
