Dad And I Planted A Tree Poem by Brad Milner

Dad And I Planted A Tree

When I was young, only three, I asked my dad if I could plant a tree.
He kneeled down and said of course you can plant a tree. I smiled and said I have something special planned, but you'll have to wait and see. My dad just looked at me and smiled, saying with a chuckle Yes, this will be the perfect tree, for you and me, our special tree.
So with shovel in hand, my dad and me found a perfect spot for my little tree. And so excited I was, this small little twig, knowing someday it would grow to be so big.
Both me and the tree grew up and up and up. It branches grew long and gave lots of shade. Down below, critters homes were made. At first earthworms galore, then much much more. Small birds would come and see the tree, and stick around for the worms you see.
Before I knew it, I was no longer a child. My tree was just a distant memory. And I had moved far far away, why this happened I cannot say.
But as the tree grew up to the sky, some doves built a nest, up in my tree. And there they lived, a sight to see.
As the young doves grew, it came for the time to fly away from my tree. As the birds left, they looked back and said. Work must be done, that is the key. To find someone, this is our task. Our journey is long, so we must fly fast.
Sitting in chair, so far over there, I was a little sad, though glad i wanted to be.
When all at once, a flutter I heard. I looked out the window, and what did I see, but a single white dove, looking at me.
I don't know why but I followed the dove. Day and night, night and day. The dove kept circling showing me the way. Where are we going, I asked to the dove. He only looked at me, with eyes full of love. Follow me, they said, and you will see. The reason Im here, you will soon see.
At last we came to the reason I could see, this beautiful dove, had come to me.
It was my tree. My tree I see. Now I remember, I remember you see. That a long time ago, when I was only three, angel came and spoke to me. He told me to plant a tree, and one day it would grow and be home to a dove. A gift of a dove, given from above.
And this dove would show me the way the way back home to my tree, that I planted when I was only three.
