Dark Secrets Poem by PADMINI DUTTA SHARMA

Dark Secrets

Maya regrets today the day she told a lie
First white lie to her mother like a sly
Her conscience did pinch her thrice
She put it back to sleep by surprise.

She stole money and lost in Bingo
And coolly walked up to join a tango
No one suspected her innocent smile
Proved she had mastered the art to beguile
Poor maid was severely punished
Maya was happy after her mission accomplished

She fell in love with a lanky lad
He was taller and smarter than her dad
He was her team captain
They often had fun near the fountain
Sitting close they watched the sky
Till she learnt he had to bid good bye

Maya spent a lot of time near the mirror
Winked at boys from the rear
Too keen to look her very best
She dressed scantily at her friend’s behest

She cheated in the finals
Without guilty pangs giving any signals
The first kiss in the alleys
Tasted a bit tangy and kind of acidic

She pushed Willow out of the window
For it bothered her always like a shadow
She signed a letter in her mama’s name
The gentle lady had to quit out of shame

She called Virginia’s fiancé and proposed
Having avenged she then disposed
After all the kick and the abuse
She did not become a God forsaken recluse

When she first saw a couple making love
Her heart fluttered like a thirsty dove
She thought that wasn’t a funny game
She discovered excuses not that lame

She signed her progress reports many a times
Deleting reds she thought weren’t big crimes
She wooed her math teacher out of fun
Did not hesitate to steal her dad’s gun

Secrets are dark and mostly grey
Without any exceptions we all fall prey
But a time comes in our lives
When confessions act like piercing knives
Blood oozes from the fresh wounds
That is ghastly and sticky like the red hounds
We all have a dark side
That takes us for a jolly good ride.
