Darkness Poem by George Aul

Darkness

We touch the darkness,
and the darkness touches us,
the day lights our way,
the night scatters us all;
darkness invades our world,
our safety, security, and sanity,
the thoughts we have change,
the desires we feel change.
Darkness is the savage beast
enveloping everything in its path,
a new world opens itself to us...
shadows lengthen,
imaginations broaden,
horizons lower as the night approaches.
What seems touchable is now
more distant in the darkness,
what seems logical
now fades in the dark;
the heart beats faster,
and the steps are lighter.
Yet, darkness is but one of two,
its presence, like its absence
cannot exist without the other;
without darkness, light will never be.
