Defenses Poem by Robin Rodriguez

Defenses

I'm defensive;
You're defensive.
We will never agree.

I care about my future,
You're just afraid
That I won't follow your plan.
I can follow the beaten path
For only so long
Before I trail off to make my own.

I prefer an open road with no map;
You plan and save and are never lost.
But the difference is,
I get to travel to places
That you will never see.

And you'll see the sights enjoyed
By so many others.
Both views are great and wonderful,
But I do not have to share
My view or my unique experience.

I want to take
The road I want.
Whether or not it's
The one you chose for me,
Doesn't matter; it never did.
