Dexter Disaster/Miracle Poem by Theresa Ann Moore

Dexter Disaster/Miracle

An early spring has brought
a warmth that fills the spirit with glee
Erasing away smudges of gray thoughts...
On a tree branch two doves oversee

The day couldn't be more perfect...
encouraging a walk around the yard
Broad green blades of irises resurrect…
a smile surfaces while caught off-guard

Hours drift away beneath a radiant sky
Unexpectedly a huge bank of darkness
appears in the west as sirens begin to cry
The air is still… there is a sense of eeriness

Disbelief emerges as the warning blast wails,
'take cover now'… the alarm is unrelenting
Rain with pelting hail accompany a severe gale
No longer doubting credibility… descending

Seeking safety… to a lower level we bound
The newscast informs a tornado is near...
touching down in a neighboring town
A shade of baffling green fills a sky of fear

Lightening flashes continue to agitate
the rumbling of thunder as the rain subsides
Rushing streams form for debris to navigate
Apprehension fades as storm clouds divide

A torment of concern hangs suspended;
relatives of mine reside in the affected town
Are they alright now that the storm as ended;
did they see the tornado touched down?

Phone service in Dexter is nonexistent...
Trees have been ripped from the ground
Houses and business were not wind resistant
Everywhere massive destruction is found

A hundred homes damaged… some drastically
Yet there is a miracle that has been discovered
Not one person was injured… no fatalities
Helping one another, this town will recover

There are reminders of what has come to be
On a boarded up house a sign was contrived,
'For Sale, as is, Cheap! ' Amongst other debris
ironically was found… a ruby slipper size five
