Discovery Poem by Hazel Durham

Discovery

Rating: 4.9

Storm Frank is battering Ireland,
It's roar is like a lion pouncing on it's prey,
Trees bend like matchsticks as it blows along it's powerful way,
And after tomorrow it is New Years Day,

He sits alone with his racing thoughts
About friends long gone and his family who fought
For his land and peace of mind,
His bitterness flows as deep as the river that winds

Around his house, land, that finds
His breath is lost, he can't be kind
To friends or foes
His anger is bursting inside like a cancer he sows,

All alone with his thoughts that fought,
With determination to win his rights,
Now he owns all before him, the house and the best farmland,
As birds fly away from the hedgerows and trees on his land,

Silence weeps for company of friends and his beloved local band,
But he is king of silence that echoes across the big divide,
He drinks for company and starts preparing to say goodbye to 2015
But all he feels is miserable and mean,

He vows to change his ways to make 2016
A year of discovery to feel the pain and let it go,
To meet up with his old friends to even reach out to his foes,
Discovery is recovery, the battle is over he will sow

Seeds of love and friendship as he listens to Storm Frank as it batters,
With the echoes of laughter and singing, too love is what matters,
He will go to the local pub tomorrow and chatter
With his neighbours and friends,

Now he doesn't feel alone
As his spirit and soul reaches out
And finds a heart and a home!

We read from the news about the flood and hurricane in Ireland! When Nature unleashes her fury, the damage it causes is often irreparable. But the inner damage caused to humans by the feelings of loneliness and bitterness is even more devastating! So nice that he has made a resolve to start 2016 with anew attitude to life ! He vows to change his ways to make 2016 A year of discovery to feel the pain and let it go, To meet up with his old friends to even reach out to his foes, Discovery is recovery, the battle is over he will sow Love these lines! Your message of hope and renewal is apparent and mentioned in your previous reviews, but I want to mention the music of your words, the wonderful linguistics of rap or rhythm that I found so charming. Please read my work and hopefully the swaying words will relate to you. Thanks, Marianne Larsen Reninger P.S. have you written a poem for Dr. Fab's new ebook, Poets Against Terror? I'm one of the 7 US poets in the Anthology and am reading it now. Marianne Larsen Reninger

Truly a pleasure to read this poem. As a reader I felt drawn into the loneliness of the man sitting in the farm, with a mean storm raging outside. The memories of the past, the hope for the future all mingled into wonderful verses. Discovery, such a well chosen title. Reminiscing on the past we discover the potential for what is to be I wish you also a very happy new year (I hope it is not too late for that)

I like the message in this poem, Hazel. Many farmers in the past have ended up being slaves to the land. Working harder for longer for no extra reward. Running hard just to stand still. Not enough hours in the day, they become reclusive. Mother Nature cannot be beaten and sooner or later we must wake up to the fact. Storm Frank has taught the farmer how futile our efforts can be, especially when we are alone in this world. He has resolved to seek the emotional support of friends in the new year.
