Dockside Leather Poem by Padmanabhan Ananth

Dockside Leather

Another of those work breaks
At pretty Pier 39 of San Francisco docks
It was summer in that breezy Pacific coast
'But still cold' told my thick wool overcoat

A quick pizza at wayside joint
Made me saunter to waterfront
Then looked around for local goodies
For back home my two then pre-teen kiddies

Noticed colourful name boards at an outlet
Skills at display, of Korean leather brush artist
To take a closer look, I cautiously walked over
But was astonished by that young Hangkuk painter

On narrow white or colour board
He deftly used calligraphy leather brush
And tiny bottles of water colour
To create perfect picture alphabet art

Merrily he made dainty name boards
Where letters was also pretty pictures
Of a colourful parakeet, slender swan
Mighty tree, diving dolphin, setting sun

Commissioned him to paint both my girls' names
Curious at the names, then set off with full focus
Choosing bright colours from the little bottles
Flowed from his brush decorated colour letters

Inside an 's' a pretty baby dolphin
Inside an 'o' or 'r' tiny trees green
Other alphabets had mighty wave, dune
Signature flair with famed bridge's outline

Those two artistic name boards well mounted
My offsprings' study rooms, have adorned
Now they've grow up for those fancy stuff
But I fondly recall that eve's word-pictures' speak.
