Don'T Ask Why Poem by Chantelle Nixon

Don'T Ask Why

What have I done?
Look at you, you fool
Stupid, stupid, how could you?
You were so strong
You should have let it be
And now... just look
In that glass
All shiny yet smeared
Who is that girl
Looking back at you
With eyes so big
Filled with naïve beliefs, endless doubts
What is that creature
Forming false smiles
And dropping tears like rain storms
A broken heart never heals
Just temporarily with glue
And when he hurts you again
It will shatter even more
Into millions more pieces
How could you condemn yourself
For a man who cannot be yours
Who would never sacrifice
As you have for him
And whether it is a week from now
Or maybe a year or two,
When he hurts you
Makes you black and blue
Or maybe even black and red
And you ask the good Lord, “Why? ”
Look back at this glass
Shiny yet smeared
And answer through your tears
“It is my own fault! ”
“You are your own demise! ”
