Don'T Get Sucked In Poem by derrick foster

Don'T Get Sucked In

Their voices are like quick sand (don’t get sucked)
They try to pull us in with incessant complaining
We refuse to be dragged into the mire

Their stares are like cement (don’t get sucked in)
They try to bind us with accusations unfairly
We struggle against the forces that bog us down

Their opinions are like arrows (don’t get shot down)
They shoot us with commentary missiles
We dodge these projectiles skillfully in defiance

Their comments are like colanders (don’t get sifted
through)
The try to hold us in with derogatory nets
We always escape because they hold no water

No matter how hard they try to control us with speech,
gesture and thought
We know who we are and surf the tyranny with cunning,
skill and style (not taken in)
When will they finally realize the only control is
over self?

Which is sometimes hard to achieve when pressure comes
from a vacuum.
Let that sink in and let us get on with our vibrant
lives unencumbered
(Definitely not sucked in by the black holes before
us)
