Doppelganger Poem by Sarah Liz Bowman

Doppelganger

I saw a shadow in the glass the other day
But when I blinked it had gone away
I wasn't one to jump at shadows on the wall
For all I knew they had gone down the other hall
I went about my day but had an uneasy chill
I was jumpy all day- against my will
I was a fan of ghost stories old and new
The more I read the more my unease grew

As the days passed I saw the shadow in every reflection
I wanted to shatter the glass in every direction
Doing that would give me no way to see this specter- this thing
I would rather know where it was- what harm it would bring
It never moved but was always there
I could see no eyes but feel its stare
Why am I the only one who sees?
Why does this thing take an interest in me?

Hours or is it days have passed
all I can do is stare into the glass
The shadow is much closer now
I can't look away I don't know how
The specter raised a bony hand
It was then that I knew I had been dammed
Now I know the shadows name
Death has decided to end his game
