Down By The River Poem by Jason Cline

Down By The River

Down by the river there's a place I often go
when I've had enough and I need to clear my head,
when I need my space and I need to be alone.

Way out past town, beyond the end of Surrey Road,
farther than the fields, past the windmill and the shed,
down by the river there's a place I often go.

Past the maples and the oaks where the tall grass blows
you can find me there, in a place that's seldom tread
when I need my space and I need to be alone.

It's over where the cattails and the cane reeds grow,
where the fish and the birds come see you to be fed.
Down by the river there's a place I often go.

When the water's warm I go down and wet my toes,
sitting on the trunk of a tree that's fallen dead
when I need my space and I need to be alone.

It's there I think of love and times of long ago,
I think about a girl and where she is instead.
Down by the river there's a place I often go
when I need my space and I need to be alone.
