Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde Poem by Rajesh Thankappan

Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde

We all have in us a benign Dr. Jekyll
And a bit of malignant Mr. Hyde,
Both these gentlemen for an opportune time bide
And with all their might towards them entice.

The Harder we try to kick Mr. Hyde out of the town
He with stubborn resistance refuses and still hangs around,
So is he not like a bouncy football hard, dry and round
Who in spite of all the kicks bounces back into the ground?

If you wish to dispute this story, oh my dear friend
Give me a chance to stand up in its defence!
I understand that you shall take no offence
If I were to say something of substance.

Friend, don’t we often seen Dr. Jekyll in a child
And Mr. Hyde too when he turns wild?
Dr. Jekyll in the child shares with his friend his puppets
While Mr. Hyde loves to tear apart a healthy live insect!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Though the original story 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'
by R.L. Stevenson is all about split personality, I think, an element of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde exists in all human beings. Though we may not be predominantly Mr. Hyde yet mankind has some shades of him in us.
