Drifting Away Poem by Smoky Hoss

' For the beginning is assuredly
the end -since we know nothing, pure
and simple, beyond
our own complexities. ' - William Carlos Williams

You work hard to make it
from dawn to dusk each new day,
you'll switch off the light come every night
and then go drifting away -

You do what you must
but would rather go out and play,
the Lord says you'll get your reward
when your soul goes drifting away -

You stop in your tracks
kneal and pray,
hoping these words are heard
as up they go, drifting away -

You go to the bar
to hear what the blues men say,
a couple of drinks, and you begin to think
it may be best to just go drifting away -

The waitress brings you one more
upon a dirty old tray,
she smiles all the while
but, you know she'd just as soon you'd go drifting away -

You make up your mind everything is fine
and today it's all ok,
but when the day is done you'll wish you could run
and let it all drift away -

So you head out the door
to be upon your way,
wishing the old car would drive off far
to where everything wrong goes drifting far away -

You make one last stop by the bank
to draw your pay,
in walks a man, with a gun in his hand...
when he pulls the trigger you'll go on forever, drifting away -

A good poem elaborating on some reality issues.
Sometimes I feel like reality is closing in and 'd like just drifting away from it
Yet on other times, I manage to count the blessings, to see so much beauty,
that I truly love the reality so much.
The last stanza brings us with our feet back on the ground
Finally all of us will drift away into another reality (?) ... (Report) Reply

Well I'd certainly like to go drifting away many times over Smoky, but think I'll give the last stanza a rain check!
Great poem, well written. (Report) Reply
