Eli At 4 Poem by Howard Camner

Eli At 4

I watch him through the glass
because I'm not allowed in
He runs and jumps and tumbles with the others
and never acknowledges me

But on the balance beam
he loses his footing
and I feel my breath catch

He picks himself up,
flashes me a smile,
and gets right back on like it never happened

And we both know,
he's ready for life
