Endless Dream Poem by Elizabeth Gaytan

Endless Dream

I close my eyes and there you are.
When I dream you are there, we are so happy together.
It is an endless dream, that seems so real.
There, I see you and feel your warm touch.
But as I wake up you are gone.
My bed is empty and my soul is so cold and alone.
I walk to the front of the door and still see your boots and your military uniform.
But one thing is different it hasn't been worn.
Because every morning, I still lay out your clothes waiting for you to come home and change into then.
I can't lie to myself but to realize that your not coming home anymore.
If you knew how much I miss you and how hard it is to read your last letters.
How every night, I hold on to your picture saying it's just a dream.
That you'll come home, and when I open the door there you'll be.
But when I open the door, all I see is the band playing and soldiers carrying you away.
There are flowers everywhere, people dressed in black and the guns firing.
As I stood there, to me it was a dream.
But I knew that I wasn't dreaming when I held on to the folded up flag.
All I want to do is go home and sleep, so I can dream of you.
Because in my dreams you are always there.
Where no war or shattered guns can take you away from me, to me it just becomes an endless dream.
