Exam Time (For The Girl Who Struggled) Poem by David Clinch

Exam Time (For The Girl Who Struggled)

Silent, uncomfortable, no sign of help.
Sombre adult sweeping eyes.
Slowly it ebbs away, the feeling.
Success, they say it means so much,
I don't understand.
No scribbling thoughts about comparison of play and novel.
The silence haunts me.
Dreams of the future. Where now?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
(Written whilst covering an English Literature exam at Pilton Community College in Barnstaple)

A young Year 10 student did not understand quite what she was being asked to do. It was under exam conditions, so I couldn't help too much. When the lesson was ending her friend said she should come to her house that evening and she would explain things, as there were another 2 hours left to finish the task. A touching act of friendship and solidarity I thought.

I think it reminded me too of my own feeling of failing and desperation whilst doing my GCE's in the late 60's
