Eyes That Will Not See Poem by Patrick William Kavanagh

Eyes That Will Not See

Why do you pass me with averted eyes,
Your gaze avoids me, oh so carefully,
You ramble on so cheerfully.
As if my difference, was a thing, you could not see,
and in a way, you are as blind as blind can be,
For you will never ever see the mystery,
the Life, the Trials, the Tragedy, The Comedy, The Love.
The person that is Me, inside this damaged frame,
and you will never ask my name.
I pity you.

Is your world so small, so cramped, so closed,
You cannot find a tiny space for me.
You will not catch some terrible disease, you will not die,
if you should take a moment just to look into to my eyes,
and see your own humanity reflected there.
Perhaps you've lost it, maybe you no longer care.
All the years of watching as the “Joneses” sped ahead,
may have burned despair into your worried head,
and you no longer feel at all. But still,
I pity you.

I have a life, I live inside a world that you will never know,
I have a home and loving family and friends, and places that I go.
I am not some monster, I am many people, living many lives.
I Am a child, a fireman, or a veteran, -
I may have saved a dozen lives,
or struggled to survive since I was born.
But you will never know,
You fear to look into my eyes,
and that is why,
I Pity you.
