Family Ties Poem by Tosin Abegunde

Family Ties

Under same battlement
Without retirement
With resentments
Sprayed on rents

The killing
The preaching
Taxies the junction
Of unplanned nation

Since inception it stows
Patiently with its bows
Yet, nothing to show
On the toe

Understanding you miss
My dear bro' and sis'
Six seize the creed
When the bang plead

Yet all here in one bed lay
Yelling on the way
Insider or outsider
Record to consider

Same father
Different mother
Name unifies
Character signifies

Collective struggle
Factional tussle
Breeding a puzzle
In the lone jungle

When on colour terrain
Passion to retain
The foes turns friend
On a memorable to defend

While again away
The blood flows away
Soccer does it all
Here within this wall.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The background of the story is the undefined sentiment among the tribes that we have in Nigeria. The three major tribes{Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo} see one another as enemy yet, they live on the same land. The only amazing fact about these people is that, despite thier hatred for one another, whenever the Football National Team play, 'god-of-soccer' would restore peace there in automatically, and they will embrace one another but immediately after the football match their enemity resumes. This implies that only soccer makes us one in Nigeria, others are side attractions!
